How should soccer cleats fit?

A correctly fitting cleat passes four checks:

  • Midfoot: snug and locked in, with no pinching across the widest part of the foot and no pressure points when laced.
  • Heel: no slipping or lifting when your child walks or jogs. Heel movement is the single most reliable sign the cleat is wrong.
  • Overall: no hot spots, no toe pressure, no "it'll break in" hopefulness about a spot that already hurts.

Two practical rules make this much easier to judge. Why buying a size up "to grow into" backfires

Is wearing firm-ground cleats on turf actually dangerous? This is worth stating carefully, because the internet overstates it. A systematic review of cleat–surface interaction found that turf models showed a protective effect across surfaces while soft-ground models performed worse and carried higher risk markers on artificial grass — but the same review concluded there is "no broad consensus as to the adequacy of the kind of the cleat to the respective field," noted that much of the research relies on biomechanical proxies rather than actual injury counts, and flagged that some studies were funded by shoe or turf companies. The honest version: matching studs to surface is sensible, well-motivated, and improves comfort and grip, but claims that FG-on-turf reliably causes ACL tears in children go well beyond what the evidence supports.

The wear argument is simpler and undisputed: firm-ground studs grind down fast on turf and concrete, so mismatched cleats die sooner.

Are metal studs allowed in youth soccer?

Usually yes in principle, often no in practice — and the answer depends on your league and your field, not on the Laws of the Game.

The Laws don't even require cleats; Law 4 mandates "footwear," and general sports shoes are technically permitted. On metal specifically, AYSO's referee guidance states that metal cleats (usually aluminum) are acceptable, but that the referee must inspect all types of cleats to ensure there are no burrs or sharp edges. What is clearly prohibited is worn or pointed replaceable studs with exposed shafts, and shoes with pointed spikes such as track or baseball shoes.

Two caveats that decide it for most families:

  • Many individual youth leagues impose stricter blanket bans on metal studs than the Laws require, particularly at younger ages.
  • Artificial turf facilities routinely ban them outright, regardless of league rules.

Practically, very few youth players need soft-ground cleats. Unless your child plays on genuinely heavy, muddy grass, molded studs are the right call — and you avoid the whole question. Check your club's equipment policy before buying, and expect a referee to look at the studs during the pregame equipment check.

Cleats, heel pain, and Sever's disease

If your child complains of heel pain during preseason, cleats are worth a look. Sever's disease (calcaneal apophysitis) is, per Cleveland Clinic, "a type of repetitive strain injury in your child's heel" that is "very common — especially between ages 8 and 14, when growth spurts often happen." When should you replace kids' soccer cleats?

Most youth players need new cleats roughly every season, or about every four to eight months, depending on growth, how often they play, and the surface. Heavy tournament players on turf burn through them faster.

Replace them when you see any of these:

  • Studs visibly worn down or rounded off — traction goes first, and slipping on cuts follows.
  • The sole separating from the upper, or tears anywhere in the material.
  • Your child says their toes hurt or the sides feel tight — usually growth, not damage.
  • Blisters appearing where there weren't any before.

In practice, kids outgrow cleats more often than they wear them out. Check the fit at the start of each season rather than waiting for a complaint, and check again mid-season during a growth spurt.

What you don't need to spend money on

Cleat pricing follows the same logic as soccer ball pricing: the expensive end of the range is built for professionals playing on perfect surfaces, not for a growing 10-year-old.

A mid-range cleat from a reputable brand, in the correct size, with the right studs for the field, is genuinely all a youth player needs. Elite models use thinner, lighter uppers that wear out faster — actively the wrong trade-off for a child who will outgrow the pair in six months anyway. Spend on fit, not on the badge.
